The name that spells itself
Among Ouija users, few names carry more dread than Zozo. The story follows a familiar arc every time.
An entity introduces itself politely, then turns hostile. It threatens the user and their family. The planchette races in rapid figure eights, spelling Z-O-Z-O-Z-O across the board.
The legend exploded online. But where did it really come from, and how old is it truly?
The Darren Evans story
Modern Zozo traces to March 2009. A man named Darren Evans posted a long, harrowing account on a ghost story forum.
He described the planchette spelling ZOZO, the entity claiming it would take his family to paradise, then spelling H-E-L-L. His post went viral, and hundreds claimed similar experiences.
That 2009 post is the true origin of the phenomenon as we know it. Almost everything after grew from it.
The ‘ancient’ claims deserve scrutiny
Believers argue Zozo is centuries old. The evidence is shakier than it sounds. Take the most cited example.
The 1816 ‘Dictionnaire Infernal’ does mention a girl possessed by demons named Zozo, Mimi, and Crapoulet. But the same author noted the case was untrue, since the girl had already been punished for faking possession.
Other links are retroactive. Tying Zozo to the Mesopotamian Pazuzu or to Led Zeppelin’s ZoSo symbol is pattern matching, not lineage. Notably, a Nigerian forum post from 2005 predates Evans, so the name did circulate earlier, just not as ancient scripture.
A modern legend with a real warning
The most honest description calls Zozo an egregore: a modern entity powered by collective belief and repetition, whether or not anything supernatural drives the board.
That does not make the caution pointless. Ouija sessions can genuinely distress people, especially in a suggestible group at night. Fear feeds on itself around that board.
So the practical advice stands. Do not treat the board as a toy, and do not try to summon anything by name. This topic can be unsettling. If a session ever leaves you or someone with you in real distress, step away and reach out to a trusted person for support.
