Ohio’s most famous UFO encounter began at Port Columbus. On October 18, 1973, an Army Reserve helicopter crew took off from the city bound for Cleveland. Near Mansfield, over Charles Mill Lake, they reported a red light closing on them and a cigar-shaped craft that seemed to bathe the cabin in green light. Captain Lawrence Coyne said he briefly lost control before landing safely.
The Coyne Incident remains one of the most credible UFO reports in United States history. Note the geography, though. The encounter happened near Mansfield, not over Columbus itself, even though the flight originated there. Details like that get blurred in retelling.
The mid-century wave
Local reports stretch back decades. In January 1959, a rural Columbus woman called police about a red, glowing light hovering over her pasture, frightening her cattle. In December 1966, a man reported an egg-shaped object along a central Ohio highway that seemed to make car headlights and engines act up. These front-page accounts capture a genuine era of sky-watching anxiety.
The modern drone confusion
Fast forward to December 2024, when mysterious lights over Delaware County, Hilliard, and other central Ohio spots sparked a wave of UFO and drone reports. The episode even disrupted operations at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. Many sightings went unexplained, and the drone-versus-UFO debate raged. It was a vivid reminder that unusual lights still baffle careful observers.
How to read a sighting
The pattern across seventy years is consistent. A handful of well-documented, hard-to-explain cases, surrounded by many reports that turn out to be aircraft, planets, drones, or the mind filling in a dark sky. Skepticism is not the enemy of wonder. It is what lets the truly strange cases stand out.
